Grade 3s are going to the Heritage House

Our Grade 3 students are excited about their chance to go back in time! Back to a time without cell phones, televisions, cars or even plastic bottles! On Tuesday they will be going to the Heritage House to get a glimpse of how life used to be during the time of the European pioneers in Canada. Children are encouraged to dress up for the occasion and bring litter-less lunches try to closely resemble pioneer life. Children will also experience a school setting of that era and see how much school has changed since that time too.

Have fun boys and girls on your trip to the past. What a cool way to learn about history!

Administrative Professionals Day is Wednesday April 26th

As everyone knows, the ladies in the school office at WPS are tops! If it's things like helping us order supplies, manage the budget, organize school events or provide our students with yummy apples or a needed bandaid, they always do it with a warm smile and caring attitude. We want them to know that their countless responsibilities and efforts on behalf of our students, parents and staff are very much appreciated.

April 26th is Administrative Assistant Day and our opportunity to give Sylvia, Cheryl and Reannon a big thank you for all they do to keep our school running and our students and staff safe and happy!  If you see them in our school office or speak to them on the phone this week, please help us say THANK YOU!

We're getting an Outdoor Classroom!!

We wanted to bring our classroom outdoors so we're building an outdoor classroom! As part of our Eco Schools initiatives we know that an outdoor classroom will encourage our students and teachers to take their learning outdoors and enjoy nature while they learn.

Our outdoor classroom will consist of two semi-circles of stone boulders and shade trees for a class to sit outside and learn. It will be installed on our property by the north school yard hopefully early next week weather permitting. Just in time for our Earth Day celebrations!

Thanks to our School Council for their efforts to raise funds and apply for an Eco Grant to support this initiatives! We know this will be enjoyed by our students for years to come especially now that the good weather is here!  Our students and community members are asked to please stay clear of this area until the installation is complete to ensure everyone remains safe to enjoy it once it is finished.

Thank you!

Earth Day and 20-Minute Vaughan clean-up at WPS

Earth Day is everyday!

With spring having officially arrived, much of the garbage that was covered underneath snow is now littering our school yards, neighbourhood parks and our communities.

Westminster will be a proud participant of the  20-Minute Vaughan Makeover that will be taking place across the city.  When weather permits, we're going out to clean up our yard, and adjoining community park.

Members of the community are also encouraged to take 20 minutes out of their day and to pitch in the cleanup from home, work or school. With everyone pitching in together, we can clean up this world class city and enjoy the warm months ahead in a clean and healthy environment. Earth Day:International Earth Day is April 22!  How can you help our planet?

Such fun at Family Math Mania!

Our Family Math Mania was a great success last week. Families with children of all ages came out to experience math activities and learning first hand. Teachers and our Grade 8 student leaders prepared learning activities that demonstrated how math is all around us. We are doing math in everything we do such as art, music, sports, science, media and everyday problems. It's everywhere! We just need to help our children identify it.

Parents and family members were shown how math instruction must change to ensure that our students are prepared for how we use math in the 21st century. This is so different from how many of us were taught as children. Here at Westminster and throughout York Region and Ontario, we are helping our students become comfortable and proficient problem solvers, collaborators and critical thinkers.

Parents are asked to help us with our data collection by filling in this short survey to help us understand attitudes regarding math. Even if you were unable to att…

Day of Pink April 12th at WPS!

The International Day of Pink is a Canadian anti-bullying event held annually on the second Wednesday of April (April 12th, 2017). The event started when students saw another student, who was wearing a pink shirt, being bullied in their school, and deciding to show support for the student by getting everyone at their school to wear pink the following day. The initiative inspired youth who founded The International Day of Pink, an effort to support their peers internationally with resources and ways to make their schools safer. More than 8 million people participate each year - including Westminster P.S! We ask everyone to show your support by wearing pink (or red) on April 12th! More information can be found at dayofpink.org
