I Have a Dream....

Ms Yang's grade 2/3 spoke about the influence that American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. had on the world and the dreams that they themselves have for us all.... I Have a Dream I have a dream that one day this world will give everyone the same amount of respect.  I have a dream that one day people will rise up to bullies. I have a dream that one day doctors will find a cure for cancer. I have a dream that there will be peace in the world. I have a dream today."  "I have a dream that one day everyone will have peace in the world."  "I have a dream that one day nobody will be poor."  "I have a dream that everyone will be free from danger."  "I have a dream that there will be no wars and no one will starve."  "I have a dream that people will have clean water."  "I have a dream that terrorism will end in our world." "I have a dream that nobody will get hurt." "I h

Some inquiry-based learning in our Kindergarten Room!

Ocean Animal Inquiry   We have had a lot of fun learning about animals that live in the ocean. Each student chose an animal that they wanted to become an expert on. Every child was able to research and find one fact about their animal. We learned so many wonderful things! Did you know that an octopus has a beak? That's what their mouth is called! Did you know that it's the daddy seahorse that carries the babies in their pouch? We decided to create a mural outside of our classroom showcasing our beautiful artwork and all the facts we learned. We also took this opportunity to learn about the difference between fact and fiction. Students were very interested in using books, Ipads, and computers to help them complete their work. First, we did our research. Next, we painted our animals and added characteristics that we found out about them. For example, we learned that an octopus has suckers on each tentacle, so we added them. Our

Black History Month

Every February, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present. Our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement to celebrate Black History Month: “Throughout our history, Black Canadians have played a key role in building and shaping the diverse, compassionate, and prosperous country that we are all so proud to call home.  “Every February, Canadians celebrate Black History Month by acknowledging the remarkable achievements and contributions that Canadians of African and Caribbean descent have made to Canada.   “I urge all Canadians to reflect on the bravery and courage of individuals like Viola Desmond, a prominent Black Canadian businesswoman who changed the course of Canadian history by defiantly refusing to leave a whites-only area of a movie theatre in 1946. “In recognition of her impact on the civil rights and freedoms movement in Canada, the Government of Ca

Term 1 Report Cards

Your child's report cards will be coming home on February 16th.   As you read your child’s  Term 1 Report Card   we hope that you receive a clear indication of your child’s strengths and areas of need.    We also would like you to help your child understand the next steps suggested for their continued growth and  progress as we embark on Term 2.    Learning Skills and Work Habits such as self-regulation is a focus for us as we help our students regulate their reactions to situations and set goals for improvement, academically and socially.  These are life long skills that they will need all their lives. With a growth mindset and perseverance, we believe all students can succeed at their goals for improvement.  The Ministry  report cards include a tear-off section where your child is to write their goals for improvement and parents can include their comments as well.   If you have any questions, you may indicate your request to discuss your child’s report with the teacher

Our "You're the Chef" program is a great success!!

We had so many students wanting to explore their culinary skills that we created two groups. The pictures below are of the session going on now for our Junior students. The Intermediate group will be able to try it in April.  Look at the healthy snacks and yummy food they are learning to cook for themselves!  Why don't you try some of these at home with your children? These recipes will be featured in our School Cookbook being compiled to be offered later this year. Remember to send in your favourite family recipes to add to our cookbook.  You're the Chef Program is part of our Healthy Schools Initiative. Yummy!

St. Valentine's Spirit Day February 14th

Chocolate, flowers and cards full of hearts....Happy Valentine's Day!   Those are some of the ways that people have traditionally celebrated Valentine's Day.  At Westminster we thought it would be fun to make it a spirit day instead!   We will be celebrating this day as a Friendship Day and encouraging everyone to wear  red ,  pink  or  hearts  on Valentine's Day at school on February 14th. We are looking forward to everyone showing their spirit and participating in this fun and happy spirit day.    In some classrooms at the discretion of the teacher, Valentine Day cards may be exchanged. Students wishing to exchange Valentines cards are asked to include one for every child in the class so all our friends can feel included. Please note, exchanges of candy or treats are not allowed as they are contrary to our healthy school policy. Other than such thematic activities, regular school programming will continue for our students. How did St. Valentine become associat

So You Think You Can Dance?

Yes! We know that our students can dance! Or at least have fun trying.  So we are happy  to have our Dance Program back again this year. Dance instructors Miss. G and Miss. S will be working with all our students for the second year to enhance our Dance Curriculum.  We are back! Last year we had the wonderful opportunity to work with the students here at Westminster Public School, creating movement compositions and exploring creative dance. We are thrilled to have another opportunity to work with the students again in 2017!  During the month of February, we will be teaching a dance program where the students will learn choreography of the hip-hop/contemporary dance form that will later be performed. These workshops will occur on the following dates and will be followed by a final performance by all classes:         February 16th, 17th (classes 4/5 – 7/8)       February 21st and 22 nd (classes K-3/4) ·     Dance Performance will be held on February 24th at 1:15 pm in the gym

A right of passage not to be missed! This year, they will also be offering sibling portraits for families that are interested.  If you have more than one child at our school and would like a picture of them together, please indicate on the form going home with your oldest child or let your children's  teachers know. After February 13th, you will be provided with picture proofs to purchase if you wish.  This may be an opportunity for some cute family memories!  Smile!

Our students are going to BORC!

Each year in York Region, students in Grades 2, 4 and 7 get the opportunity to spend the day outdoors at  BORC, The Burrlington Outdoors Resource Centre in Kleinburg.  On Wednesday, February 8th our Grade 2 students are looking forward to learning about nature, animals and our environment during their day at BORC. On Thursday, February 9th our Grade 4s will be going and on Friday, February 10 is our Grade 7's turn. Children are asked to dress appropriately for the weather.  The day will include both indoor and outdoor activities. More specific information about the day's activities was sent home to parents earlier. We're sure our students will have a fun-filled and educational day! Please note: If school busses are cancelled for the day due to inclement weather, the field trip will be cancelled and rescheduled. Regular school day programming will be provided instead.

February 3rd is a PD day!
